Science Fair Year-long Project Description:

How can we ensure maximum plant growth & reproduction while minimizing environmental impacts?

Description: In this project, you will test the effect of a factor on plant growth/reproduction in a designed experiment. After designing the experiment, your group is responsible for gathering the necessary supplies, executing the experiment, gathering and organizing data, drawing conclusions and creating a presentation about your findings. While the process will begin in class, the bulk of the work, including the actual experiment, will take place outside of class time. In order for your group to be successful, you will have to collaborate and share responsibilities.

You will conduct this experiment and analyze the results. After the initial experiment, you will conduct at least two other experiments, for a total of three. Each experiment may be a replica, test a different factor or act as a follow up experiment based on previous findings. The three experiments (which all group members will replicate at home) will be presented during this year’s science fair, tentatively scheduled for April 30th.

Do not forget the essential question of the science fair project “How can we ensure maximum plant growth & reproduction while minimizing environmental impacts?” You should keep this question in mind when you select your materials and variables in each experiment.

Tasks

1. Generate list of possible factors that can influence plant growth and/or reproduction.

2. Select one factor you find interesting and believe that you can feasibly test.

3. Select the type of plant you will use for the duration of this project. Note: if this decision takes more than a two minutes, then skip this step and complete it later (during step 7.)

4. Write a hypothesis based on the factor you selected in task 2.

5. Complete experiment design template sheet (moodle.)

6. Get approval & signature from Mr. Wilson before going on to next step.

7. Fill in blank Procedure & materials list form (moodle.)

8. Get approval & signature from Mr. Wilson before going on to next step.

9. Gather materials & conduct experiment at home. Be sure to collect data and take pictures throughout the experiment (all of the experiments) including the first day.

10. Conduct research on the type of plant you are using. You must write a three page research paper on the plant. After the paper is graded, it will be edited. The final draft of the paper will be included in the Science Fair Project Final Lab Report at the end of the year (more details to come.)

11. Share results with group members

12. Prepare group PowerPoint presentation.

13. Write lab report (Use “How to write a good lab report” from moodle.)

14. Repeat steps 2, 4-5, 7, 9, 11, 13 for the next two or more experiments.

15. Prepare Science Fair Project Presentation with samples of plants and pictures. More details to come.

16. Prepare Science Fair Project Final Lab Report (end of year). More details to come.
