Page history last edited by lucas20156l 14 years, 12 months ago

The frequency that basil is watered will affect its growth.

2008-2009

Danny, Elinor, and Lucas

6L

Hypothesis: The frequency that basil is watered will affect its growth.

Experiment Description: We will fill three cups with 150ml of soil, then dig a hole in each cup and put one Basil seed in each. pick one plant to water every day for four weeks, pick another plant to water every other day for four weeks and water the last plant every two days. Durring the experiment take notes and record the height of the plants.

Materials:

  •  3 Basil seeds
  • 1975 ml of tap water
  • 3 Styrofoam cups (at least 150ml each)
  • 450 ml of Hyponex soil
  • 1 plate
  • 1 measuring cup
  • 1 pen, pencil, or thumbtack

Procedure:

1. Gather materials listed above.

2. Poke 5 holes in the bottom of each of the three Styrofoam cups with a pen, pencil, or thumbtack.

3. Fill each of the cups with 150 ml of hyponex soil.

4. Dig one hole in each cup of soil, each about 3 cm deep.

5. Put one Basil seed in each of the cups in the holes that were just dug, and then recover it with the soil.

6. Put 25 ml of tap water in each cup.

7. Decide which cup of soil will be watered every day, every other day, or every three days and mark them accordingly.

8. Water the plants based on what is marked on the outside of the cup for the next four weeks.

9. Take out each of the plants, measure, and record their lengths.

Results:

Group Memeber's measurements of the Basil after the experiment in centimeters (cm)

Group Members Basil Watered Every Day (cm) Basil Watered Every Other Day (cm) Basil Watered Every Three Days (cm)
Danny 0 0 9
Elinor 0 0 0
Lucas  0 6 5 1/2
Averages 0 2 4.83

Group Memeber's measurements of the Basil after the experiment in centimeters (cm)

Lessons learned: From this experiment, we learned that different plants have different biological schedules that they can follow to help them grow.

Acknowledegements: Arielle (Danny's sister) for formating.
