Different Liquids Affect the Growth in Length of a Lima Bean '08-'09

Different liquids affect the growth in length of a lima bean (Experiment 3) is nearly the same as Experiment 1; with a few exceptions.   Our prediction: If the liquid a lima bean is in, affects the growth in length, then the growth in length should change when the liquid changes.  We would use many liquids and see if it would minimized or maximized the growth of a lima bean.  The plant, soil, age, weather, and time must be kept constant.  The Control Group is the lima bean being fed with water.  The Experimental Group is the three other  lima beans that are being fed with different liquids.  Everyone in our group conducted the experiment.  Unfortunately, Aissa's plants did not grow.  Many lessons were learned from this experiment.

Materials

  • Tap water  250 ml.
  • Coca-Cola 250 ml.
  • Heinz Vinegar 250 ml.
  • Isopropyl Rubbing Alcohol 250 ml.
  • Pen/Pencil
  • Styrofoam Cups 250 ml.
  • Miracle-Gro Potting Mix
  • Five Lima Beans (one just in case)

 Methods

  1. Gather materials
  2. Poke four holes in the bottom of the cup in a square shape with a pen/pencil
  3. Put lima beans in styrofoam cups
  4. Feed each plant with its specific liquid
  5. Feed each plant with a spoonful
  6. Start recording
  7. Feed plants every two days

Data Table

Different Liquids Affect the Growth in Length of a Lima Bean in Inches (")

Data Aissa Sam Damian Average
Water 0" 7" 8" 5"
Coke 0" 3.5" 3" 2.1693
Vinegar 0" 3" 0" 1"
Rubbing Alcohol 0" 3" 1" 1.3

Lessons Learned

  • Unlike our first experiment the plants being fed with rubbing alcohol grew!  This was extremely exiting.  Lima beans must gather the nutrients from rubbing alcohol better than a Raphunas Sativus Specles.
  • For Sam, his Vinegar plant grew.  Unfortunately, we do not have enough data to prove that lima beans can take the nutrients from vinegar better than a Raphunas Sativus Specles plant.
  • Also like experiment #1 water grew more than any other plant.

+ watering the lima beans with different types of liquids was a good experiment. You made a really informative Introduction.

- You should put measurements in your data.

+ nice detail on the introduction. I liked how you gave the average on the data table

- none so far
