Different Watering Liquids have an Affect on Marigolds

Sasha, Kitty, and Alex (6L)

(February 24th to March 24th '09)

Abstract

For this experiment, we were trying to ensure maximum plant growth and reproduction while minimizing environmental impact.  Our experiment's hypothesis is: Different liquids for watering affect the height of Marigolds.  We decided to see if the type of liqued that we watered the plants with can an affect of the Marigold's height. We had two containers and put one Marigold seed in each with dirt. Then we watered one plant with Orange Jucie, and the other with Flitered Tap Water. We watered them that 15 ml everyday. Lasty, we watched the plants for the next four weeks. At the end of the four weeks out hypothesis was supported.

Materials and Methods

   Materials

  • six plastic cups
  • Scissors
  • 900 ml of Hoffman’s professional all purpose soil
  • six Marigold seeds
  • camera
  • 420 ml of orange juice
  • 420 ml of flitered tap water
  • Ruler with cm on it
  •

Procedure

  1. Gather Materials.
  2. Poke three holes about 1 cm wide at the bottom of every cup.
  3. Add 150 ml of Hoffman’s professional all purpose soil into each of the two cups.
  4. Put one Marigold seed 3 cm below the top of the dirt.
  5. Water one of the plants 15 ml of filtered tap water.
  6. Water the last plant 15 ml of orange juice.
  7. Make observations.
  8. Do steps 5,6, and 7 everyday for the next four weeks.
  9. Every Tuesday and Friday take a picture of both plants.
  10. Every Tuesday and Friday measure the plants height with the ruler with cm.
  11. Make conclusions.

Results

*The last day of the experiment was three weeks after we started not four.

Lessons Learned

  • Our hypothesis was supported by the data.
  • The plants in the experimental group (plants watered with any liquid other than water) did not grow at all, but  mold in those plants grew like there was no tomorrow.
  • From our data water is the best liquid to use to grow plants in height. But we only tested orange juice to water, so we can not fully support that.

Other than the spelling errors, this one is excellent. I did a similar experiment with my group. My only comment is that some people may not know the reason why only mold grew on the OJ plants; I think that may require additional research.
