Different Liquids Affect the Growth of Basil Seeds

              2008-2009

Hypothesis: Different liquids affect the growth of Basil seeds

Experiment: Take 3 cups and fill them each with 150ml soil. Clear a hole in the dirt of each cup and
put the 1 seed in each cup. Pour 25ml of tap water into one cup. Pour 25ml of Gatorade into one cup and
25ml of Dr. Pepper into another cup. Reapeat this process for 4 weeks.

   Materials:
  • 6 250ml Styrofome cups
  • 6 Basil seeds
  • 325ml of water
  • One 2 liter bottle of Dr. Pepper
  • Two 1 liter bottle of Gatorade
  • 900ml of soil
  • 2 large plates
  • 1 measuring cup
  • 1 pencil/pen
  • 1 plastic spoon

Procedure: Different Liquids Affect the Growth of Basil Seeds

     1. Gather supplies

     2. Poke 5 holes in each cup

     3. Pour 50ml of soil into each cup

     4. Dig a hole 3 cm deep and put seeds in to the holes

     5. Water one plant with 25 ml of water

     6. Water another plant with 25 ml of blue Gatorade

     7. Water the third plant with 25 ml of Dr. Pepper

     8. Water each plant with the same liquid every other day

     9. Record height

     10. Make a conclusion

Results: Different liquids effects on Basil seeds.

Names Of Group Members Gatorade Dr. Pepper Water
Danny 0 cm 0 cm 0 cm
Elinor

0 cm 0 cm
Lucas 5 cm 0 cm 6 cm
Averages 1.7 0.0 2.0

     Lessons Learned

  • We learned that if you water a plant every other day it will grow faster than if you water a plant every day. You would over water or kill a plant if you water it every day. If you spread the days out the plant will grow longer, faster, and stronger.
  • We also learned that too much sugar will sufficate a plant and kill it. We learned this by looking at our results and for every experiment the Dr. Pepper did not grow and the Gatorade had very little growth. Both of those liquids are filled with sugar and the plant was not able to consume all of the sugar so it did not grow.
  • By accident I (lucas) bought orange Gatorade instead of blue Gatorade. My plant watered with orange Gatorade grew very big, almost as big as the plant watered with water. Although I used orange Gatorade Elinor and Danny used blue Gatorade and their plant did not grow at all. This can pose new questions and we could test again to see if orange Gatorade has a different affect on a Basil plant than blue Gatorade does.

HELLO! Nice work guys, I like that you seperated the hypothesis from the abstract. Everything was awesome, but i think in the experiment part of the wiki you should describe what you are trying to do (like, we decided to see if different liquids affected the height of plants. Something like that) rather than just writing out the procedure.

REally cool!! Why is Lucas's name always highlighted tho? Warm feedback- really cool experiment!! interesting conclusions. cool feedback-for the materials list y does it say 1, 2 liter bottle of Dr. Pepper, and 2,1 liter bottle of Gatorade and also when did u record the height??? (ex. every day every other day, etc.) Other than that tho really good!!

Ah, the things you guys now know about basil. I couldn't even pronounce it at your age. Nice job all of you. Wesley (mother of one of the experimenters)
